The line graph illustrates the proportions of people living in urban and rural areas in Viet Nam between 1960 and 2020. Overall, the rural population gradually declined, while the percentage of urban residents increased throughout the period.
In 1960, the countryside was home to the majority of Vietnamese people, accounting for around 85% of the population. This figure fell slightly to 81% in 1980 and dropped again to 80% by 1990. The decline then became more noticeable, reaching 70% in 2010 and only 63% in 2020.
In contrast, the share of the population living in cities followed an upward trend. Urban residents made up just 15% in 1960, rising to 19% twenty years later. The proportion climbed to 20% in 1990 and increased significantly after 2000, reaching 30% in 2010. By 2020, the urban population had grown to 37%, marking a steady expansion over the sixty-year period.
