The line graph illustrates the changes in the percentages of urban and rural populations in Viet Nam from 1960 to 2020.
Overall, the rural population experienced a significant decline, while the urban population increased steadily throughout the period.
In 1960, the vast majority of Vietnamese citizens lived in rural regions, making up roughly 85% of the population, while only 15% resided in urban areas. This rural dominance continued until 1980, despite a slight decrease to around 80%. From 1990 onwards, however, the proportion of rural residents began to decline more noticeably, dropping to just 63% by 2020.
By contrast, the urban population experienced a steady and continuous rise. It grew from 15% in 1960 to approximately 20% in 1980. After that, urbanisation accelerated, with the urban share reaching 30% in 2000 and eventually increasing to 37% in 2020.
