Overall, it is clear that the share of the rural population increased over the period, whereas the urban population showed a downward trend.

To begin with, in 1960, the majority of Vietnamese people lived in urban areas, accounting for 85%, which was the highest figure on the chart. This percentage fell slightly by 4% over the following two decades. In addition, between 1990 and 2020, the proportion of the urban population declined markedly, dropping from 80% to 63%.

Turning to the rural population, it stood at around 15% at the start of the period, the lowest point shown on the graph. This figure rose modestly to 19% in 1980, before increasing sharply from 20% in 1990 to 37% in 2020.
