The increasing popularity of global festivals like Christmas and Halloween among young Vietnamese people sparks a debate between celebrating cultural openness and preserving national identity. In my opinion, this trend is a healthy expression of a modern, globalized society, provided we actively champion our own traditions.
On one hand, embracing these foreign celebrations offers significant benefits. They serve as valuable forms of cultural exchange, broadening the youth’s worldview, fostering tolerance, and offering engaging opportunities for social fun and creative self-expression. They also stimulate economic activity through themed retail and entertainment.
However, the concern that these events may overshadow deeply rooted Vietnamese festivals, such as Tet or the Mid-Autumn Festival, is legitimate. The commercial aspect of Western holidays can also introduce excessive materialism. To navigate this, the solution lies in balance. As long as young people continue to observe and cherish their core traditions, adding new celebrations simply enriches the nation's cultural fabric. We must see this as cultural addition, not cultural replacement, making the most of a truly interconnected world.
