In recent years, festivals like Christmas and Halloween have become increasingly popular among young Vietnamese people. While some worry about the influence of foreign cultures, I believe that celebrating these occasions brings more benefits than drawbacks.
Firstly, joining in international festivals helps young people broaden their horizons. Taking part in activities such as decorating Christmas trees or wearing Halloween costumes introduces them to new traditions and makes them more open-minded. This experience also improves cultural understanding, which is especially important in today’s era of globalisation.
Secondly, these celebrations create joy and strengthen social bonds. Students can organise parties, exchange gifts, or go trick-or-treating, which fosters creativity and friendship. For many, these are simply fun occasions rather than a sign of rejecting Vietnamese traditions.
Of course, some fear that local customs might be overshadowed. However, the solution is not to ban foreign festivals but to promote traditional ones more actively, such as Tết or Mid-Autumn Festival.
In conclusion, celebrating foreign festivals should be welcomed as long as Vietnamese youth also value their own cultural heritage.
