The increasing adoption of Western festivals like Christmas and Halloween among young Vietnamese people sparks debate. While some fear foreign cultural erosion, I view this trend as a natural and overwhelmingly positive aspect of globalization and youthful expression.

These festivals are often enjoyed in a highly localized manner, primarily for entertainment and social gathering, offering a welcome break from routine. Crucially, they do not fundamentally displace deeply rooted Vietnamese customs, such as Tet or the Mid-Autumn Festival, which remain integral to family and spiritual life. Celebrating Halloween or Christmas is a form of cultural blending, allowing youth to participate in global trends without abandoning their heritage. It enriches the social landscape by adding layers of modern diversity.

Concerns about cultural influence are understandable, but true national identity is resilient. These celebrations are simply exciting additions to the social calendar, not substitutions. We should encourage young people to embrace such global exchanges while simultaneously promoting active, proud engagement with Vietnam’s rich, traditional festivals. This balance ensures a vibrant and modern cultural future.
