Nowadays, many young Vietnamese people celebrate festivals such as Christmas and Halloween. Some adults worry that these events may weaken traditional culture, while others believe they simply enrich social life. In my opinion, joining foreign celebrations is not harmful if we maintain our own customs.
First, these festivals provide opportunities for cultural exchange. By learning how other countries celebrate, young people broaden their understanding of the world. Decorating for Christmas or wearing a Halloween costume can teach students about history, legends, and international traditions in a fun way.
Second, such celebrations create moments of joy and connection. Street parties, games, and gift-giving help friends and families spend time together. In modern cities, these shared experiences strengthen community spirit rather than divide it.
However, we should not forget Vietnamese heritage. It is essential to continue observing Tet, Mid-Autumn Festival, and other local holidays with the same enthusiasm. Schools and families can encourage this balance.
In short, celebrating Christmas or Halloween is positive as long as young people also respect and preserve Vietnamese traditions. Diversity can coexist with national identity.
