The image outlines the structure for writing an Advantages & Disadvantages Essay, typically used in academic writing, such as the IELTS.
The structure is divided into four main parts:
1. Introduction
The introduction sets the stage for the essay:
- Paraphrase the question (rephrase the topic statement in your own words).
- Outline the views stated in the statement (mention that you will discuss both the pros and cons).
- State your opinion (only if the prompt requires you to take a stand or choose a side).
2. Main Body Paragraph 1 – Advantages
This paragraph focuses solely on the benefits:
- Topic Sentence: Start with a clear transitional phrase like "On the one hand,..." to introduce the positive aspect of the topic.
- Support: Detail the advantages using clear markers like "Firstly,..." (Advantage 1) and "Secondly,..." (Advantage 2).
3. Main Body Paragraph 2 – Disadvantages
This paragraph shifts focus to the drawbacks:
- Topic Sentence: Use a contrasting phrase like "However,..." or "On the other hand,..." to signal the shift to the opposing view.
- Support: Detail the disadvantages using transition words like "One common issue..." (Disadvantage 1) and "Moreover/Additionally/Furthermore,..." (Disadvantage 2).
4. Conclusion
The conclusion wraps up the essay:
- Summarize the key points (briefly restate the main advantages and disadvantages discussed in the body paragraphs).
- State your opinion (reiterate your position, if a viewpoint was required in the prompt).
