The downward trend continued more sharply afterward, dropping to 70 percent in 2010 and reaching 63 percent by 2020. In contrast, the urban population grew consistently. It started at only 15 percent in 1960 and rose slightly to 19 percent in 1980. By 1990, it had climbed to 20 percent, followed by a more rapid increase to 30 percent in 2010. The upward trend continued, and by 2020 urban residents made up 37 percent of the population.
