The line graph illustrates population trends in Viet Nam from 1960 to 2020. Overall, the urban population increased steadily, while the rural population declined significantly during this period.
In 1960, most Vietnamese people lived in rural areas, accounting for around 85%. However, from 1960 to 1980, this figure fell slightly to 81% and continued to drop to 80% in 1990. From 1990 onwards, the decrease became more noticeable, reaching 70% in 2010 and only 63% in 2020.
By contrast, the urban population rose throughout the same period. In 1960, only about 15% of the population lived in cities. This proportion grew modestly to 19% in 1980 and 20% in 1990. From 1990, the increase was much sharper, with the urban rate climbing to 30% in 2010 and hitting 37% by 2020.
