Overall, urbun population decreased dramaticaly while the percent of people who live in rural area increased.
In 1960, most Vietnamese people lived in rural areas, accounting for approximately 85% of the total population. However, from 1960 to 1980, the percentage of the rural population slightly decreased from 85% to around 80%. From 1990, the downward trend accelerated, falling from approximately 78% to just above 60% in 2020.
By contrast, the urban population rose throughout the same period. In 1960, the urban population was very low, standing at about 15%. In 1980, it saw a small increase to roughly 20%. From 1990, the rise became more pronounced, climbing from about 22% to nearly 40% in 2020, reflecting the country's rapid urbanization.
