The line graph illustrates changes in the proportions of urban and rural populations in Viet Nam between 1960 and 2020. Overall, the rural population accounted for a much larger share than the urban population at the beginning of the period, but this gap gradually narrowed over time.

In 1960, most Vietnamese people lived in rural areas, making up about 85% of the total population, while only 15% resided in cities. From 1960 to 1980, the rural population decreased slightly, whereas the urban population rose modestly. From 1990 onwards, this trend became more noticeable. The proportion of people living in rural areas fell sharply, dropping to around 63% in 2020.

By contrast, the urban population increased steadily throughout the same period, reaching approximately 37% by 2020. This reflects the impact of urbanization and economic development in Viet Nam.
