The line graph shows population trends in Viet Nam from 1960 to 2020. Overall, the urban population increased, while the rural population decreased.
In 1960, most Vietnamese people lived in rural areas (85%). However, from 1960 to 1980, the rural population fell slightly, from 85% to 81%. From 1990, the number continued to drop, reaching 80% in 1990, 70% in 2000, and 63% in 2010, before declining to 60% in 2020.
By contrast, the urban population rose throughout the same period. In 1960, it accounted for only 15%, increasing to 19% in 1980. From 1990, the figure grew more quickly, rising to 20% in 1990, 30% in 2000, and 37% in 2010. By 2020, the urban population had reached 40%.
