Overall, Vietnamese living in cities decreased overtime, whereas rural saw an upward trend.
In detail, in 1960, 85% of Vietnamese was living in urban areas. This number declined gradually following the next three decades to 80% by 1990. Then, from 1990 to 2020, cities experienced a massive crash in population, accounting for only 63% by the end of the period.
In contrast, people living in the countryside rose a 5% from 1960 to 1990. Furthermore, from 1990 onwards, the rural population saw a spike in percentages. By 2020, the rural areas accounted for nearly two fifth of the Vietnamese total population.
