The line graph shows the changes in Viet Nam’s urban and rural population from 1960 to 2020. However, the urban population increased, while the rural population decreased.

In 1960, most people lived in the countryside. From 1960 to 1980, the rural population fell slightly to 81 per cent , and steadily the same in the next ten years. Between 1990 and 2000, it continued to drop slowly, and by 2020 it reached only 63 per cent.

By contrast, the urban population kept rising. In 1960, only about 15 per cent of people lived in cities. The figure grew a little by 1980 and stayed stable until 1990, when it was still below 20 per cent. After 1990, the urban population increased steadily and reached 37 per cent in 2020.
