Mount Everest is located on the border between Nepal and China, in the Himalayas. At 8,848 meters above sea level, it is the highest point on Earth. The mountain is sacred to local people and is called “Sagarmatha” in Nepalese and “Chomolungma” in Tibetan. Around 3,000 climbers have reached its summit. The first to do so were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. The best time to visit is from April to early June and September to November. Visitors usually fly to Kathmandu, then travel to Lukla and hike about 14 days to Everest Base Camp.
