Many travellers to Viet Nam wonder: ‘Why do Vietnamese people burn colored papers?’ These papers are known as ‘votive paper’. They can be houses, clothes, fake money, cars, motorbikes,...made of paper. They represent gifts for the ancestors. This practice originates from the belief that death is not the end of someone's life. People burn

votive as offerings for the dead to use in the afterlife. Therefore, votive items are often valuable

objects meaning that the dead could still enjoy material life in their ‘new life’. Votive papers

actually symbolize the link between life and death. The burning ritual takes place regularly on

particular days such as festivals, new and full moon days, yearly ancestors’ death anniversaries or

the Lunar New Year. After people burn the papers, they sprinkle a little wine upon the ashes so that

the spirits can get to heaven and bring gifts for their ancestors.

People also burn votive paper because they wish to have better results in exams, better revenues for

business, to get rid of some disease, or to bring safety, happiness and good luck to their loved ones.

Statements

1. Votive paper often represents valuable things.

2. Vietnamese people believe that there is an afterlife.

3. Votive paper shows that there is a link between life and death.

4. People burn votive papers at any time they like.

5. Some people burn votive paper to wish for good health and wealth.

Protecting yourself and others from the spread of COVID 19

You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID 19 by taking some simple precautions:

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol- based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Why? Washing your hands with soap and water  or using alcohol- based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and others. Why? When someone coughs. sneezes, or speaks they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person has the disease.

Avoid going to crowded places. Why? When people come together in crowds, you are more likely to come into close contact with someone that has COVID-19 and it is more difficult to maintain physical distance of 1 metre (3 feet)

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose, mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and infect you.

You should wear a mask, and know how to dispose of it properly

17. You should clean your hands with an alcohol- based hand rub and then with soap and water.

18. You can maintain 4-feet distance between yourself and others.

19. Never touch eyes, nose and mouth because the virus can enter your body and infect you.

20. Wearing a mask is effective enough to protect you from the virus.

21. The main idea of this passage:

       A. Wearing a mask is compulsory.

       B. Taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

       C. It’s difficult to maintain physical distance of 1 metre.

       D. Wearing and disposing of a mask properly keep us healthy.

22. “dispose of it properly” means:

       A. wear a mask in a good way.

       B. throw it as quickly as possible.

       C. wash and reuse it many times

       D. wash hands immediately after putting a mask into the dustbin

And now, besides Dr. Bethune, whenever mention of this country with beautiful maples, my Canadian pen pal will come to my mind. I met him in an English-learning forum. I often posted a lot of questions there, and he always voluntarily helped me out. And gradually, we got familiar and became friends. For a while, I was rather depressed. He always encouraged me to cheer up. Now, I still remember well I got an e-card from him. I lighted up after watching that. He often said, “Keep smiling” at the end of his letter to me. He was very tolerant, and I hardly saw he crossed swords against any other forum members there but one time. A woman put up a post, saying, “She would not agree her daughter to marry a black man.” He responded with Martin Luther King’s quote “We must judge people by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin!”. White cotton T-shirts were first worn by the US Navy in the Second World War and by 1948, every American soldier was wearing one too. But it was Hollywood films that made the T-shirt really popular: actors Marlon Brando and James Dean wore classic white T-shirts in On the Waterfront (1954) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955). After these films, every young man wanted to wear one.

Women didn’t begin to wear T-shirts until the end of the 1950s. In the 1959 French film about de souffle (breathless), American actress Jean Seberg wore a T-shirt advertising an English language newspaper. This started a new fashion in T-shirts for women, but it wasn’t until the mid-1960s that companies like Budweiser and Coca-Cola started using T-shirts as ‘walking advertisements’.
