Ly Thuong Kiet was one of the most famous generals in Vietnamese history. He knew the Song army would invade our country, so he took advantage of the defense and defeated Yongzhou.

Angry at Ly Thuong Kiet's attack on the Yongzhou citadel in 1076, the Song entered our country by land and waterways with 100,000 elite soldiers. But, the Song navy could not further support the army because our army blocked them outside the coast in the Nhu Nguyet river. The leader of the Song troops was impatient because he couldn't see the navy force coming. Thus, he ordered his men to make huge rafts to cross the river. Their army moved toward the Nhu Nguyet River, but the Ly army was there to attack and push them back. Ly Thuong Kiet ordered his army to read the poem 'Nam Quoc Son Ha' aloud to encourage our army. As time passed, the Song force was tired. Our Dai Viet troops made a total counterattack. The Song was lost entirely.

Ly Thuong Kiet did not want to lengthen the wars, so he proactively offered the enemy a way out. The Song immediately agreed, withdrew to the north, and no longer intended to invade Dai Viet again.
