Meteor showers have interested people for many centuries. In the past, many people did not understand these events and often saw them as (1) ____________ from the gods or warnings of disaster. Later, scientists began to study the night sky (2) ____________. One important event was the Leonid meteor storm of 1833, which was seen across North America. This event made many scientists realize that meteor showers were natural space events, not supernatural signs. 1. Before telephones became common, pigeons were used for communication by carrying messages. These were called carrier pigeons. People would write a message on very thin and light paper, rolled it into a small tube, and tied it to the pigeon's leg. A carrier pigeon could also carry a package up to 75 grams on its back. However, a pigeon could only fly back to the place it knows as home, so the system worked only when the sender had the receiver's pigeons.

2. About 3,000 years ago, carrier pigeons were used to declare the winners of the Ancient Olympic Games. Carrier pigeons were also used a lot during World War I. One pigeon, Cher Ami, received the French Croix de Guerre award for its bravery in delivering 12 important messages during the war despite being badly injured. Even in the 21st century, some police departments in Odisha, eastern India, used pigeons for emergency communication after natural disasters. But in March 2002, India announced that the Police Pigeon Service in Odisha would retire because the Internet had become more widely used.
