1. Noise pollution is an invisible but significant threat, present both on land and in the sea. It refers to unwanted sounds that disrupt the health and well-being of humans and other living organisms. This type of pollution affects millions of people daily. The most common health issue it causes is Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, but it can also contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep disorders, and stress. These health effects can impact individuals of all ages, with children living near noisy environments such as airports or busy streets being particularly vulnerable to stress and cognitive problems, including memory and attention issues.

2. Noise pollution also impacts on the health and well-being of wildlife. Studies have shown that loud noises can cause caterpillars' dorsal vessels to beat faster, and cause bluebirds to have fewer chicks. Animals use sound for a variety of reasons, including navigating, finding food, attracting mates, and avoiding predators. Noise pollution makes it difficult for them to accomplish these tasks, which affects their ability to survive.

3. Increasing noise is not only affecting land animals but also marine life. Activities like shipping, oil drilling, and sonar testing have made the ocean environment noisy and disruptive. Whales and dolphins are particularly impacted, as they rely on echolocation for communication, navigation, feeding, and mating. Excessive noise interferes with their ability to use echolocation properly.

4. Seismic surveys also produce loud blasts of sound within the ocean. Ships looking for deep-sea oil or gas deposit two devices called air guns and shoot pulses of sound down to the ocean floor. The sound blasts can damage the ears of marine animals and cause serious injury. Scientists believe this noise may also be contributing to the altered behavior of whales.

1. For centuries, people used a needle and thread to create items such as dresses and quilts. In the United States, girls born before 1860 spent their childhood learning hand-sewing skills to make clothing and bedding for their families once they were married. They dedicated many hours to perfecting small, durable stitches. However, with the invention of the sewing machine, everything changed. 2. In 1830, Barthelemy Thimonnier invented the first sewing machine in France, but it was not widely used. In 1846, Elias Howe patented an improved version in the United States. His sewing machine had several upgrades and was designed for use in textile mills, not for home use. [II] These innovations set the stage for later developments in sewing technology.

3. Soon, other inventors started copying Howe's design, with the most famous being the Singer Manufacturing Company. In 1859, Isaac Singer created a sewing machine that could be used at home. [III] These machines were costly, priced between 75 and 100 dollars, which is about 2,000 to 3,000 dollars today. Knowing this was too expensive for many, Singer and his partner Edward Clark devised a payment plan, allowing families to pay five dollars per month. [IV] This made the sewing machine more affordable for more people.

4. After this, sewing machines became increasingly affordable, allowing more people to purchase them for home use. As a result, the method of making quilts changed. By the late 1800s, more quilts were assembled using machines. Some even began using sewing machines for the intricate stitches that held the quilt's layers together.

5. As sewing machines became more widely used for making clothes and quilts, fewer people learned the skill of hand-sewing. By the early 1900s, many had forgotten how to stitch by hand. However, some quilters made an effort to preserve this tradition and took the time to relearn hand-sewing techniques.
