Efforts in protected areas like Tram Chim National Park aim to preserve this unique environment. Organizations continue to (6) _______ sustainable practices to protect the delta's biodiversity and raise awareness about its crucial role.
Việt Nam is one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, ranking 16th in the world. (1) _______. Because Việt Nam is long, its climate changes a lot, from warm and tropical in the south to cooler in the north. This range of climates helps create a wide variety of natural environments, (2) _______.
The country has a huge number of species. Scientists have found about 12,000 types of plants. Many of these are endemic, meaning they are found only in Việt Nam—sometimes as high as 50% of the plants. Animal life is also very rich, including 276 types of mammals, 828 birds, and 180 reptiles. (3) _______, like certain birds, fish, and primates. This rich variety is very important for science and the economy.
However, all this rich wildlife is facing serious threats. The main problems come from a growing population, pollution, cutting down forests, and using natural resources without planning. This is putting many animals in danger. (4) _______, including many mammals and birds. Also, the illegal trade and consumption of wild animals is a serious threat, (5) _______.
1. At the 20th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CITES Convention (CoP20), Việt Nam reaffirmed its commitment to preserving nature, conserving biodiversity, and combating the illegal trade of endangered wildlife. The conference, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on November 24, focused on over 120 crucial agenda items, including policy development, financing, law enforcement, and proposed amendments to the CITES Appendices. The aim of these discussions was to ensure that the international trade of endangered species remains legal, sustainable, and fully traceable.
2. During the Ministerial Session, titled 'Enhancing the strategic impact of CITES CoP20 from policy to practice: Monitoring, financing, and action for wildlife trade,' Nguyễn Quốc Trị, Việt Nam's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment, presented the country's efforts to tackle illegal wildlife trade. He stressed that sustainable development, which includes nature conservation and wildlife protection, is a key priority for Việt Nam's government. This commitment is reflected in national policies that promote economic, social, and environmental balance, as well as green growth and circular economy principles.
3. Trị also highlighted Việt Nam's notable achievements in safeguarding its natural resources, including maintaining 42 percent forest cover, expanding protected areas, and strengthening measures to combat illegal wildlife trafficking. In collaboration with neighboring countries, Việt Nam has dismantled transboundary wildlife trafficking networks and destroyed significant quantities of illegal wildlife products, including ivory, rhino horn, and pangolin scales.
4. Việt Nam has also improved its legal framework for wildlife protection, introducing new laws, action plans, and financial mechanisms to support conservation. These efforts have generated more than VNĐ3 trillion annually through payments for forest environmental services. However, the deputy minister noted that there is still a significant gap between conservation needs and available resources. He urged more international cooperation and sustainable financing to support wildlife protection efforts.

1. Overfishing is a big problem that reduces fish populations and damages marine ecosystems. It happens when fish are caught faster than they can reproduce. Unlike traditional fishing, which allowed fish to recover, modern industrial fishing takes too many fish, upsetting the balance of ocean life.
2. Fishing has been a crucial source of food and income for millions of people globally. [I] However, industrial fishing practices, along with illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, have intensified the problem. With increasing demand for seafood due to population growth and economic pressures, global fish stocks are nearing collapse, with nearly 90% now fully exploited, overexploited, or depleted.
3. The consequences of overfishing on marine ecosystems are significant and widespread. By focusing on specific, often commercially important species, overfishing leads to a rapid decline in these populations. [II] For instance, the population of Atlantic bluefin tuna has decreased by more than 80% since the 1970s. The removal of large fish disrupts the food chain, particularly impacting predators like sharks, which causes an increase in their prey, further disrupting the ecosystem.
4. Certain fishing methods, such as bottom trawling, cause significant damage to marine habitats. [III] These practices destroy essential ecosystems like coral reefs and seagrass beds, which support numerous marine species. Coral reefs sustain about 25% of marine life and are highly vulnerable to such destructive techniques. Additionally, bycatch— the unintentional capture of non-target species like dolphins, turtles, and seabirds—accounts for up to 40% of global marine catches, resulting in unnecessary mortality and waste. [IV]
5. Overfishing negatively impacts coastal communities that rely on fishing for their livelihood. As fish stocks decline, fishermen catch less, leading to economic struggles and loss of income. The collapse of local fisheries also increases competition for remaining resources, resulting in conflicts. To address these issues, sustainable fishing practices, habitat protection, and regulations to limit bycatch and habitat destruction are essential to restoring marine ecosystems and ensuring the health of our oceans for the future.
