Strong Relationships Equal Health, Happiness

What will most help you lead a long happy and healthy life? Is it making lots of money? Is it a great job that you enjoy? Perhaps it’s fame. If you ask a young person, many are likely to give you one of those answers. Or possibly all three.

Some cultures put more importance on work and money than others. Americans can be obsessed with their jobs and making money. They might feel the need to make lots of money for education, medical care, homes and cars. But it’s not just about the money. For many Americans, self-worth is linked to our professional success or failure. Many of us spend most of our lives working – sacrificing other activities.

Imagine if we could visit our older selves and ask -- "What would you have done differently to be truly happy?" But we can’t do that. We could learn about what makes people happy, and what does not, by studying people over the course of their lives.

Dear Margaret,

Gerald told me recently that you have put in an offer on a house on Paxman Muse, just around the corner from me, and I thought I’d let you know a couple of things.

We’ve been experiencing problems associated with a noticeable rise in crime in the area, particularly car theft and burglary. This has been happening to us and our neighbours for over a year now, and my wife and I have been desperate to leave the area. We have chosen to rent a house somewhere nicer, and I thought I’d advise you to do the same.

The current property prices do not reflect the changes that have occurred in the area over the last twelve months, and I fear that you would be making a bad investment. We were considering a place in nearby Dimbleby; it’s quite small, but that means that high crime is unlikely.

Wherever you decide to live, I just wanted you to know that I would advise against moving here, as I think you deserve something better.

How are you? I hope you and John are doing well. I can’t believe it’s been 2 years since our last vacation together!

I have been really busy with the new shop and thanks to word of mouth, sales are going great! In fact, I have even decided to have a website created for the store. Would you be interested in creating the site for me? As you know, my store sells handmade silver jewelry. I have extended the range of products to include other handmade items like ceramic figurines. I want the site to really capture the feeling of the store, which as you probably remember is kind of exotic, with souvenirs from my travels around the world.

Since I update my merchandise regularly, the site will need to reflect that. I have recently bought a very high-quality camera and some studio equipment so I am able to photograph the products myself. I just need you to set the site up and upload new photographs as they become available.

Do you think you can do this? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Of course, I don't expect you to work for free; you'll have to charge me what you would charge any client, regardless of our friendship.

I am really excited for this new adventure. I hope to hear from you soon!
